Not sure it is the belt tensioner?

A belt tensioner replacement appointment is a repair appointment. It does not include testing or troubleshooting. If you are not sure the belt tensioner is the problem, book Diagnose Unusual Sounds instead. The technician finds the cause and quotes the repair.

Is it the belt tensioner? Signs to watch for

  • A chirp or squeal comes from the front of the engine when you start the car.
  • The noise gets louder when you turn on the AC or other electrical loads.
  • A rattling or knocking noise comes from the belt side of the engine.
  • The serpentine belt flaps or jumps while the engine is running.
  • The belt has walked off a pulley or come off completely.
  • The battery warning light comes on while you drive.
  • The steering gets heavy on a vehicle with belt-driven power steering.
  • The AC stops blowing cold air when the belt slips on the compressor pulley.
  • The engine temperature climbs on an engine with a belt-driven water pump.
  • You smell hot rubber from the engine bay.

Belt tensioner, belt or idler pulley?

The belt tensioner is the spring-loaded arm that keeps the serpentine belt tight. When it gets weak or the pulley bearing wears out, the belt can slip, flap, squeal or come off. A worn belt is the rubber loop itself, and an idler pulley is a guide pulley with no spring. These parts sit close together, so the symptoms can sound alike.

What happens if you wait

A weak or noisy tensioner usually gets worse as the spring and pulley bearing wear. The belt can slip on the alternator pulley and stop charging the battery. If the belt comes off, the alternator, AC compressor and other belt-driven parts stop turning. On some engines, the water pump is belt-driven, so the engine can overheat.

What it costs, and how the price is set

Belt Tensioner Replacement is priced for your car on the written estimate. The price depends on your vehicle's year, make, model and engine, and on what has to come off to reach the tensioner. It includes the belt tensioner assembly, parts and labor, the complimentary multipoint visual inspection, and the EZCC 12-Month / 12,000-Mile Service Warranty.

Before anything is scheduled, you get a written estimate for your car, and you approve it online. The appointment is confirmed only when the estimate is approved, so the price is set before the technician comes to you. It changes only if you approve a change on site. A deposit may be collected online when you approve; the balance is due when the work is done, online, by card in person, or in cash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you replace the belt tensioner in my parking garage?

+

Usually, yes. EZ Car Clinic needs a parking spot for the service van close to your car. If the garage belongs to a building or HOA, confirm that the work is allowed before you book.

Can you replace the idler pulley at the same visit?

+

Yes, when Idler Pulley Replacement is on the approved estimate. Add it to your request before the estimate is approved. Work that is not on the estimate is quoted for a later visit.

Will a bad belt tensioner make the battery light come on?

+

Yes, it can. If the tensioner lets the belt slip on the alternator pulley, the alternator may not charge the battery correctly and the battery warning light can come on.

How long does a belt tensioner replacement take?

+

Usually about an hour. It depends on your vehicle's year, make, model and engine, where the tensioner sits, and what has to come off to reach it.

Do I need to be there?

+

Yes. Someone must be there to hand over the key and approve any change to the estimate. They do not need to stand by the car, but they are welcome to.

Are there any additional fees for weekend or same-day service?

+

No, we don't charge extra for weekend or same-day appointments. If our schedule allows, we're happy to get your vehicle back on the road as soon as possible at no extra charge.

Most services carry an on-site service fee to cover technician dispatch and travel to your location. This fee is clearly listed on your estimate.

If additional work is needed during your appointment, your technician will discuss it with you and provide an updated estimate for your approval before performing any additional services.

Can I cancel or reschedule?

+

Appointments may be canceled or rescheduled up to 48 hours before the appointment; changes made within 48 hours are subject to a late-change fee under the booking policy.

Can you replace the belt with the tensioner?

+

Yes, when Belt Replacement is on the approved estimate. Add it to your request so it is quoted with the Belt Tensioner Replacement, and the technician brings the parts for the approved work.

Is a bad belt tensioner the same as a bad serpentine belt?

+

No. The serpentine belt is the rubber loop. The belt tensioner is the spring-loaded arm and pulley that keeps that belt tight against the other pulleys.

Can I drive with a noisy belt tensioner?

+

A noisy tensioner can let the belt slip or come off. If that happens, belt-driven parts stop turning, which can affect charging, AC, steering assist or cooling depending on the vehicle.

Can I get a same-day appointment?

+

Same-day appointments may be available when the schedule permits, but they are not guaranteed. EZ Car Clinic is an advance-booking service, not an emergency roadside or towing provider. Your appointment is confirmed only after you approve the estimate.

How do I pay?

+

EZ Car Clinic may collect a deposit online when you approve the estimate. The balance can be paid online, by card in person, or in cash when the work is done.

What does the belt tensioner warranty cover?

+

The EZCC Service Warranty on the belt tensioner is 12 months/12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Coverage conditions and exclusions are explained in the full service warranty terms.
