Not sure it is the fuel pump / sending unit?

A fuel pump / sending unit replacement appointment is a repair appointment. It does not include testing or troubleshooting. If you are not sure the fuel pump / sending unit is the problem, book Diagnose / Troubleshoot instead. The technician finds the cause and quotes the repair.

Is it the fuel pump / sending unit? Signs to watch for

  • The engine cranks normally but will not start.
  • The car starts, runs for a short time, then stalls.
  • It sputters or falls on its face when you press the gas.
  • It loses power going uphill or merging into traffic.
  • It takes a long crank before starting after the car sits.
  • A loud whining sound comes from the fuel tank area.
  • The fuel gauge stays on empty after filling the tank.
  • The fuel gauge jumps around or drops suddenly while driving.
  • The car stalls more when the tank is low or during turns.
  • The check engine light is on with fuel pressure or fuel level related codes already known.

Fuel pump or sending unit?

The fuel pump moves fuel from the tank to the engine at the pressure the engine needs. When the pump is weak or failed, the engine may crank without starting, stall, sputter or lose power under load. The sending unit reads the fuel level in the tank, so a sending unit problem usually shows up as a wrong, jumpy or stuck fuel gauge.

What happens if you wait

A weak pump usually gets less reliable. Long cranking can turn into a no-start, and sputtering can turn into stalling while the engine is asking for fuel. A bad sending unit can make the gauge lie, so the car can run out of fuel even when the dash says there is fuel left.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you replace the fuel pump / sending unit in my parking garage?

+

Usually, yes. EZ Car Clinic needs a parking spot for the service van close to your car. If the garage belongs to a building or HOA, confirm that the work is allowed before you book.

Is the fuel pump the same as the sending unit?

+

Not exactly. The pump sends fuel to the engine, and the sending unit tells the dash how much fuel is in the tank. On many vehicles they are built into the same in-tank module.

Do you have to drop the fuel tank?

+

It depends on the vehicle. Some cars have an access panel under the rear seat or cargo floor, and others require access from below the car. The estimate is built around the way your vehicle is made.

How long does a fuel pump / sending unit replacement take?

+

Usually one to three hours. It depends on the vehicle's year, make, model and engine, whether the pump is in the tank or on the engine, and whether tank access is under the seat, under the cargo floor or from below the car.

Do I need to be there?

+

Yes. Someone must be there to hand over the key and approve any change to the estimate. They do not need to stand by the car, but they are welcome to.

Are there any additional fees for weekend or same-day service?

+

No, we don't charge extra for weekend or same-day appointments. If our schedule allows, we're happy to get your vehicle back on the road as soon as possible at no extra charge.

Most services carry an on-site service fee to cover technician dispatch and travel to your location. This fee is clearly listed on your estimate.

If additional work is needed during your appointment, your technician will discuss it with you and provide an updated estimate for your approval before performing any additional services.

Can I cancel or reschedule?

+

Appointments may be canceled or rescheduled up to 48 hours before the appointment; changes made within 48 hours are subject to a late-change fee under the booking policy.

Can you replace a fuel pump if the car will not start?

+

Yes, when Fuel Pump / Sending Unit Replacement is already the approved repair on your written estimate. If the car will not start and the cause is not known, book Car Is Not Starting Diagnostics instead.

Will Fuel Pump / Sending Unit Replacement fix my fuel gauge?

+

It fixes the gauge when the sending unit is the failed part. If the gauge problem has not been narrowed down, book Diagnose / Troubleshoot first.

Is the fuel filter replaced with Fuel Pump / Sending Unit Replacement?

+

Yes, if your vehicle uses a serviceable fuel filter for this job. Some filters are built into the pump module or fuel system and are not separate service parts.

Can I get a same-day appointment?

+

Same-day appointments may be available when the schedule permits, but they are not guaranteed. EZ Car Clinic is an advance-booking service, not an emergency roadside or towing provider. Your appointment is confirmed only after you approve the estimate.

How do I pay?

+

EZ Car Clinic may collect a deposit online when you approve the estimate. The balance can be paid online, by card in person, or in cash when the work is done.

What does the fuel pump / sending unit warranty cover?

+

The EZCC Service Warranty on the fuel pump / sending unit is 12 months/12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Coverage conditions and exclusions are explained in the full service warranty terms.
