Not sure it is the coolant temperature sensor?

A coolant temperature sensor replacement appointment is a repair appointment. It does not include testing or troubleshooting. If you are not sure the coolant temperature sensor is the problem, book Diagnose Check Engine Light instead. The technician finds the cause and quotes the repair.

Is it the coolant temperature sensor? Signs to watch for

  • The temperature gauge stays cold after the engine has warmed up.
  • The temperature gauge jumps high, then drops back to normal.
  • The check engine light is on for an engine coolant temperature sensor fault.
  • The radiator fan runs from a cold start.
  • The radiator fan stays on after the engine is shut off.
  • The radiator fan does not come on when the gauge climbs in traffic.
  • The engine is hard to start when cold.
  • The idle is rough right after startup.
  • You smell fuel from the exhaust because the engine is running too rich.
  • Fuel mileage has dropped with no change in how you drive.

Coolant temperature sensor, thermostat or radiator fan?

The coolant temperature sensor sends engine temperature information to the computer and, on many vehicles, affects the gauge and radiator fan command. A thermostat problem is about coolant flow through the engine and radiator. A radiator fan problem is about moving air through the radiator at idle and in traffic. These problems can feel similar from the driver's seat, so if the cause is not already known, start with a diagnostic appointment.

What happens if you wait

A bad coolant temperature sensor can give the computer the wrong temperature signal. The engine may add too much fuel, idle poorly, start hard, or turn the radiator fan on at the wrong time. If the gauge or fan command is affected, you may not get a clear warning when the engine is actually getting hot.

What it costs, and how the price is set

Coolant Temperature Sensor Replacement is priced for your car on the written estimate. The price depends on your vehicle's year, make, model, engine and where the sensor sits on the engine. It includes the coolant temperature sensor, parts and labor, clearing related trouble codes, the complimentary multipoint visual inspection, and the EZCC 12-Month / 12,000-Mile Service Warranty.

Before anything is scheduled, you get a written estimate for your car, and you approve it online. The appointment is confirmed only when the estimate is approved, so the price is set before the technician comes to you. It changes only if you approve a change on site. A deposit may be collected online when you approve; the balance is due when the work is done, online, by card in person, or in cash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you replace the coolant temperature sensor in my parking garage?

+

Usually, yes. EZ Car Clinic needs a parking spot for the service van close to your car. If the garage belongs to a building or HOA, confirm that the work is allowed before you book.

Can a coolant temperature sensor make the radiator fan act wrong?

+

Yes, on many vehicles the computer uses the coolant temperature signal to control the radiator fan. A bad signal can make the fan run too much or not come on when expected.

What if my car is actually overheating?

+

If the gauge climbs, coolant is leaking, steam is present, or there is a sweet coolant smell, the problem may be more than the sensor. Book Diagnose Engine Overheat if the cause is uncertain.

How long does a coolant temperature sensor replacement take?

+

Usually one to two hours. It depends on your vehicle's year, make, model, engine and where the sensor sits; some are near the top of the engine, and some are under intake parts or near coolant pipes.

Do I need to be there?

+

Yes. Someone must be there to hand over the key and approve any change to the estimate. They do not need to stand by the car, but they are welcome to.

Are there any additional fees for weekend or same-day service?

+

No, we don't charge extra for weekend or same-day appointments. If our schedule allows, we're happy to get your vehicle back on the road as soon as possible at no extra charge.

Most services carry an on-site service fee to cover technician dispatch and travel to your location. This fee is clearly listed on your estimate.

If additional work is needed during your appointment, your technician will discuss it with you and provide an updated estimate for your approval before performing any additional services.

Can I cancel or reschedule?

+

Appointments may be canceled or rescheduled up to 48 hours before the appointment; changes made within 48 hours are subject to a late-change fee under the booking policy.

Can a bad coolant temperature sensor make my car hard to start?

+

Yes. If the sensor sends the wrong cold or warm reading, the computer can command the wrong fuel mixture. That can cause hard starting, rough idle, fuel smell or poor mileage.

Will this fix my check engine light?

+

If the coolant temperature sensor is the known cause, replacing it and clearing related trouble codes addresses that fault. If the cause is not known, book Diagnose Check Engine Light before a repair.

Can I drive with a bad coolant temperature sensor?

+

It may still run, but it can run rich, start poorly, use more fuel and give bad temperature information. If the radiator fan depends on that signal, the engine can also run hotter than it should in traffic.

Can I get a same-day appointment?

+

Same-day appointments may be available when the schedule permits, but they are not guaranteed. EZ Car Clinic is an advance-booking service, not an emergency roadside or towing provider. Your appointment is confirmed only after you approve the estimate.

How do I pay?

+

EZ Car Clinic may collect a deposit online when you approve the estimate. The balance can be paid online, by card in person, or in cash when the work is done.

What does the coolant temperature sensor warranty cover?

+

The EZCC Service Warranty on the coolant temperature sensor is 12 months/12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Coverage conditions and exclusions are explained in the full service warranty terms.
